- European parliament sets the agenda and outlines the legislative framework for pan-European regulation, you can find their directives here.
- Each country interprets the legislation then either creates new documentation or modifies existing documentation to bring it into line with the European directive(s). A useful source of information can be found here.

- Every activity undertaken eventually has some impact on the environment, from the disposal of nuclear waste to the control of contraceptive drugs in water; DEFRA has a useful source of information.
