The science of agriculture has seen many changes over the past few years; farmers are expected to do more with fewer resources in an industry where more legislative control is added every year.
Soil provides a reservoir of nutrients for crops. By measuring the chemical composition of your soil we can assess the availability of these chemicals for plant growth and predict the fertiliser requirements for future land use.
In general;
- Soil Nitrogen Supply and Soil pH & Liming have a larger effect on crop growth, yield and quality than any other parameter and should be managed on an annual or cropping basis.
- Soil Nutrients (P, K & Mg) and Trace Soil Nutrients (e.g. Boron, Copper and Zinc etc) are as important, but less sensitive to cropping and are therefore recommended every 3-4 years.
Unless you are using intensive farming techniques, our recommendation is to measure the Soil Nutrients, every three years and apply the appropriate fertiliser according to the needs of the land and your intended use. Do this in rotation for each field and document the results.
Remember, soil fertility can go up or down depending upon fertiliser use.
